Overcoming FOMO

You may not have heard of FOMO prior to this blog, but once I describe it, you will realize that you have experiential knowledge of it.

Tell me if this sounds familiar:

... ABC company is going public. You did not participate in the initial public offering, but on the day the stock went public, because you saw the massive appreciation in the stock price, at midday you decided to hop on the train, only to learn that the stock plummeted at the close of the market.

Which felt worse?

The fear of missing out (FOMO) or the massive unrealized loss?

The answer is almost ALWAYS FOMO. Why? Because you can justify that it's just an unrealized loss. It's not real until you sell the stock."

The irony of this is that neither is FOMO real. But it is the feeling of you missing out that makes it appear to be real.

Now here is the thing: FOMO is a double-edged sword. It has the same negative psychological impact from action (looking ahead) or inaction (looking through the rear view mirror).

I recently missed my goal by a very thin margin at the close of one week, convincing myself ...

At the opening of the new week, I expected my numbers to carry over, only to discover that there was a precipitous fall in my numbers at the beginning of the new week. FOMO convinced me to keep looking backward. To focus on the fact that I may never get that close to my goal again (at least not in the near future).

So what got me out of this valley?

Glad you asked! It was the word of God that pulled me out of this funk. Specifically, it was Matthew 28:`18 .....

"And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me."

When I realized that this authority was delegated to me and that I was not acting in God's authority and that I was opening myself up to condemnation, my strength came back, my joy came back, and my faith came back.

Friends, it's ok to be shaken from time to time. It just tells us, "We're still a work in progress."

"Everything that can be shaken will be shaken, so the unshakable will remain" - Hebrews 12:27 (NKJV)

How did I not see this?

Several weeks ago, my wife and I were working on our taxes when suddenly she asked, "Did you see the condition of the plant on your desk?"

I looked (for the first time), and the plant was literally "on life support."

I never noticed it!

Our blog title today points to a very popular question in the Bible. Abraham was asked, "What do you see?" Ezekiel was asked, "What do you see?" and in the gospels (Mark 8:22-26), the blind man was asked, "What do you see?"

Maybe I did see the plant (as dead,) and I had just procrastinated putting it out with the garbage.

But the fact of the matter is that even in its deadened state, the plant was very much alive, giving me life (through photosynthesis).

As we celebrate Good Friday, I pray that we see ourselves (not just Jesus) in Good Friday.

The apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 4:10:

"Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body."

This verse clearly shows us that "Good Friday" ishould be celebrated each and every day for the "denying of ourselves" (aka death of flesh.) Ref. Luke 9:23

Health vs. Healing: A Fraternal Reflection on a Dream Worth Sustaining

(MLK Day Edition)

Today, I pause not only as a minister, chemical engineer, and health advocate—but as a fraternity brother.

Today, I honor my fraternity brother, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a son of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.—an organization founded on scholarship, leadership, service, and the relentless pursuit of justice.

Dr. King is remembered as a healer of a wounded nation. Yet, when one listens closely to his words and studies his vision, it becomes clear: he did not merely seek healing—he dreamed of health.

Healing addresses what is broken.
Health sustains what is right.

That distinction matters—biblically, historically, and biologically.

A Biblical Lens: God’s Preference for Health

In 3 John 2, the apostle writes:

“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

This is a health-centric verse. John is not responding to illness or crisis. He is articulating God’s desire for alignment—a state of being where spiritual prosperity and physical health coexist. Health here is not episodic; it is normative.

By contrast, Exodus 15:26 introduces God as Jehovah Rapha:

“For I am the Lord that healeth thee.”

Healing is God’s gracious response when alignment has been lost. It is restorative, powerful, and necessary—but it is also reactive. Healing follows breakdown. Health preserves design.

God reveals Himself as a healer—but His original intent is health.

MLK’s Dream: From Healing to Health

As an Alpha man, I see Dr. King not only as a civil rights icon, but as a visionary who understood systems.

The Civil Rights Movement sought healing for the wounds of racism, segregation, and injustice. But Dr. King’s dream—the Beloved Community—was a vision of societal health: justice flowing naturally, dignity upheld universally, and humanity living in moral alignment.

A healed society still bears scars.
A healthy society builds sustainably.

Dr. King did not want America perpetually recovering. He wanted America well.

The Science Bridge: Health Is Alignment

Modern science affirms this ancient wisdom.

At the cellular level, health is defined by efficient energy production. Our mitochondria—the engines of life—require proper inputs: light, oxygen, nutrients, and rhythm. When these inputs are present, the body thrives. When they are absent, dysfunction occurs, and healing becomes necessary.

Healing, biologically speaking, is the body’s attempt to restore lost order.
Health is the body living in energetic harmony.

Light plays a central role. From “Let there be light” in Genesis to modern photobiomodulation, light signals life, organization, and activation. Without light, systems decay. With light, they regenerate.

Scripture and science agree: health is alignment.

A Fraternal Call Forward

As Alpha men, our mantra is, "First of All .... Servant of All" — in education, justice, leadership, and yes, health.

Healing is essential.
But health is strategic.

Healing redeems the past.
But health secures the future.

So today, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I honor my fraternity brother not only by remembering his sacrifice—but by advancing his vision.

The Compound Effect—Upgraded by Heavenly Intelligence (HQ)

Most people are familiar with The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy.

Its central idea is simple yet powerful: Success is not sudden—it is built through small, consistent actions over time.

Hardy highlights four elements that compound into success:

Preparation
Attitude
Opportunity
Action

What HQ (Heavenly Intelligence) reveals is this:

These four principles don’t disappear in the Kingdom of God—they get upgraded.

HQ doesn’t remove discipline. - It redefines direction, timing, and impact.

1. Preparation → Formation (The HQ Upgrade)

Preparation, in the natural sense, focuses on skill development, knowledge, and readiness.

These (absolutely) matter—but HQ goes deeper.

In Heavenly Intelligence, preparation becomes spiritual formation.

“Solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” — Hebrews 5:14

Formation answers a different question:

Not What do I know?
But Who am I becoming

In HQ:

Preparation happens in private
Character precedes capacity
Discipline shapes discernment

HQ Insight:
You don’t prepare just to perform—you prepare to be positioned.

Overflowing With Hope

Imagine a world filled with individuals who execute their day-to-day affairs from a place of overflowing hope.

This means that, no matter what your profession is, ultimately, what you bring to your clients is hope (because you are operating from that place of "overflowing hope").

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

- Romans 15:13

This verse of scripture is so rich. It is subdivided into five parts:

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace
as you trust in him
You may overflow with hope
By the power of the Holy Spirit

This is not a typo

I know you are saying, "Didn't you say there were five parts to the verse, but you listed 4. Was that a typo? Well, it is not a typo because the 5th element is unwritten. The unwritten statement in Romans 15:13 is that we have a part to play in "the God of hope filling us with Joy and peace."

Our part is in James 3:18

18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

As we [the fruit of righteousness] sow ourselves in the field of the world (Matthew 13:38), God says to Himself, "There is a vessel through whom I can do great exploits."

He says, "That's a vessel that I (the God of Hope) will fill with all joy and peace" as we sow ourselves (daily) with an anticipated ROI (Return on Investment) of Kingdom Advancement."

Divine Partnership

"1 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink." - Luke 5: 1-7

The Lord is seeking a partnership with your enterprise

In these seven verses lies the secret to divine manifestation. Where was Jesus during this scene in Luke 5? He was in the marketplace.

Why is this significant?

It's significant because He met these marketplace leaders at a place of despair and frustration. They were professional fishermen; they toiled all night and caught nothing.

Before you read any further, please say this three times .... "Manifesting my divine destiny is not based on skills but on a threefold partnership."

This threefold cord includes:

- The Holy Spirit, the one who occupies, teaches, and leads
- You and I (our role is to follow the Holy Spirit's Righteous Leadership)
- Destiny Helpers (Those who have been assigned to us for the " big catch")

As you examine Luke 5:1-7 once more, you will see the role of each of these players in this threefold partnership.

Even if you do not see any sign of destiny helpers on the horizon, or fruit from your labor, rejoice and thank God; "wait for it, they will surely come." - (Habakkuk 2:3)

God never intended for us to manifest our divine destiny on our own.

Our emotional health, spiritual health, and financial health (III John 2) on the journey towards divine manifestation depend on the team participation of each member of the threefold partnership.

The Flow of Generosity

Rivers of living water

Scripture

“He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” — John 7:38

Reflection

When Jesus speaks of “belly,” He points to the deepest part of our being — the inner core where the Spirit dwells. This place is like a spiritual reservoir, designed to overflow. Just as a river doesn’t exist for itself but to bring life to everything it touches, the Spirit within us produces an outpouring that blesses others.

I believe this “living water” is expressed as a spirit of generosity. Generosity is not merely an act — it is a flow. It begins in the unseen place within us, where God deposits His abundance, and it manifests outwardly in giving, kindness, compassion, and care.

When generosity flows from within, it is not forced or fabricated. It is a natural outpouring of the life of God. The more we yield to His Spirit, the freer the river runs — refreshing communities, healing relationships, and igniting hope in dry places.

Prayer
Lord, let the rivers of Your Spirit flow freely from within me. May my life be a continual stream of generosity that refreshes those around me.

Get Behind Me Satan

When you hear the statement, "get behind me, Satan," we often immediately refer to the disciple, Peter.

But have we ever considered that this may also apply to Jesus' response to our prayers?

Scripture: Mark 8:33

33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan! he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

Comment:

Did you notice the word "merely"?

Jesus was not saying we ought to have in mind the concerns of God versus human concerns, but rather, our mind ought not to only (merely) be filled with the concerns of man.

Satan, therefore, is rooted in self.

If our mind is filled with the concerns of man (aka self-absorption), then we should not be surprised by the rebuke, "Get behind me, Satan," no matter how genuine our prayer is.

Wake Up Church

When Self-Help Becomes
Self-Worship

In our modern church culture, we've subtly shifted from preaching dependence on God to promoting spiritual self-actualization. We've traded the radical message of "God has helped" for the comfortable doctrine of "God helps those who help themselves." But what if this fundamental shift has put the church to sleep?

A Tale of Two Approaches: The Job Interview

Consider Sarah, a faithful church member preparing for a crucial job interview. In today's church culture, she might hear:

"God gave you talents—now use them! Visualize success, speak positive affirmations, dress for the job you want, and believe in yourself. God wants you to reach your full potential!"

This sounds spiritual, even biblical. But compare it to what Paul might have said:

"Boast in your weaknesses, that Christ's power may rest upon you. Trust not in your own understanding, but acknowledge Him in all your ways. Whether you get this job or not, God has helped you and will continue to help you according to His perfect will."

The Maslow Deception

Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs has unconsciously become our gospel roadmap. We preach that God wants us to progress from basic needs to self-actualization, from dependence to independence. But Scripture tells a radically different story.

Jesus didn't come to help us become self-actualized. He came because we were dead—spiritually, completely, utterly dead. Like Lazarus in the tomb, we needed someone else to call us to life. We needed someone to say, "Come forth," because we couldn't even respond until He gave us the ability to hear His voice.

The Sleep of Self-Sufficiency

When Jesus said Lazarus had "fallen asleep," He used a euphemism for death. But there's profound truth here for the church today. We've fallen asleep to our need for God's help.
We've confused spiritual maturity with spiritual independence.

True spiritual maturity isn't growing from dependence to independence—it's growing in our understanding of just how dependent we really are. The mature believer doesn't need God less; they recognize they need God more than they ever imagined.

Back to Sarah

Let's return to Sarah and her job interview. What if instead of self-help spirituality, her church taught her this:

"Sarah, whether you get this job depends entirely on God's sovereign will for your life. Your worth isn't determined by your performance, your talents aren't your own, and your future is secure not because of what you can do, but because of what Christ has done. Go into that interview not to prove yourself, but to represent the One who has already proven Himself faithful. If you get the job, remember: God has helped. If you don't get the job, remember, God has helped."

The Wake-Up Call

Jesus is calling to His church today just as He called to Lazarus: "Come forth!" Come out of the tomb of self-sufficiency. Come away from the grave clothes of spiritual independence. Remember that your very name (character) as a believer means "God has helped."

The world offers self-actualization. Jesus offers resurrection. The world promises you can become your best self. Jesus promises you can become a new creation. The difference isn't subtle—it's the difference between life and death.

Integrity is a two sided coin

Integrity: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Integrity is often defined as doing the right thing even when no one is watching. But I’d like to offer a more actionable lens. Integrity has two sides:

Doing what you say you’re going to do.
And if you can’t, letting the other person know.

It seems simple, but how often do we miss one side of this coin?

Side One: Doing What You Say

When we follow through on our commitments, we build trust, credibility, and a reputation of dependability. This is the most recognizable side of integrity. We applaud the friend who shows up, the colleague who keeps deadlines, and the leader who honors their promises. This side says: “You can count on me.”

Biblical Example: Daniel

Daniel, in the Old Testament, is a powerful example of this kind of integrity. Even under pressure in Babylon, he kept his commitment to prayer and devotion to God. He didn’t compromise, he kept his word on praying three times a day, even when his life was on the line. His actions spoke louder than words—he didn’t just say he would remain faithful, he lived it out in the lion’s den.

Daniel teaches us that integrity sometimes costs something—but it is always worth it.

This second side is less celebrated, but just as important. Life happens. Deadlines shift. Energy wanes. Emergencies arise. Sometimes, we genuinely can’t do what we said we would.

Integrity isn’t about perfection—it’s about responsibility. When you realize you can’t fulfill a commitment, integrity means speaking up early and clearly. It’s not failure—it’s stewardship of trust.

A Modern Day Example: A Team Commitment

Imagine a team member promises to deliver a key piece of a project by Friday. But on Wednesday, their child gets sick, and their week turns upside down. Instead of ghosting or staying silent, they email the team: “I won’t make Friday’s deadline. Can we regroup or adjust the timeline?” That simple act of communication keeps trust intact. Why? Because the team wasn’t left in the dark.

Too often, we think silence will protect our image. But silence erodes confidence. Speaking up—early and honestly—is integrity in action.

Why Both Sides Matter

When we only practice one side of integrity, we create imbalance.

If we only focus on doing what we say, we set ourselves up to quietly fail when things don’t go as planned.
If we only communicate when we can’t follow through, but rarely keep our word, we become unreliable.

True integrity is holding both. Following through when we can. Owning up and informing others when we can’t.

It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being real, responsible, and respectful.

A Final Thought

What if our relationships, teams, and communities became known for this kind of integrity?

What if we normalized honest follow-through and brave communication?
Let’s stop making integrity a high bar we fear and start making it a standard we live.

Sometimes, keeping your word is heroic. Other times, letting someone know you can’t is even more courageous.

Integrity is not just what you do—it's how you handle what you can’t do.

"If you fail under pressure, your strength is too small." - Proverbs 24:10 (NLT)

Imagine a bridge designed to carry 10 tons suddenly forced to bear 50 tons. What happens? Catastrophic failure. Not because the bridge was poorly built, but because the load exceeded its capacity. Solomon's wisdom in Proverbs 24:10 presents us with a similar reality check: pressure reveals the true measure of our strength.

For kingdom-minded leaders navigating corporate boardrooms, entrepreneurial ventures, and marketplace ministry, this verse isn't just ancient wisdom—it's a diagnostic tool. When pressure mounts and decisions must be made, what's really governing your choices? Your IQ? Your emotional intelligence? Or something deeper, more enduring, and infinitely more powerful?

Beyond IQ and EQ: The HQ Imperative

In our modern leadership landscape, we've been conditioned to believe that intellectual capacity (IQ) and emotional intelligence (EQ) are sufficient for navigating life's complexities. Yet every day brings fresh evidence that even the most brilliant minds and emotionally astute leaders can crumble under pressure.

This is where HQ—Heavenly Intelligence Quotient—becomes not just beneficial, but essential.

HQ is your capacity to perceive, understand, and operate your earthly responsibilities from a place of heavenly realities, wisdom, and governance. It's the ability to see through heaven's lens while your feet remain firmly planted in marketplace realities.

Consider the daily pressures you face:

Financial pressures that tempt compromise
Performance pressures that drive ungodly competition
Success pressures that blur the line between godly ambition and worldly pride
Time pressures that fracture your priorities
People pressures that test your integrity

IQ might help you analyze these pressures. EQ might help you manage your emotions around them. But only HQ provides the supernatural strength to overcome them.

"For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith." - 1 John 5:4

John's declaration isn't religious rhetoric—it's a strategic principle for kingdom leaders. The "world" in this context represents the entire system of pressures designed to conform us to patterns contrary to God's kingdom. In your sphere of influence, this might manifest as:

Educational systems that promote humanistic wisdom over divine truth
Business practices that prioritize profit over people
Government policies that conflict with biblical values
Cultural trends that normalize what God calls abnormal

The apostle John reveals that faith is the victory mechanism that enables us to overcome these systemic pressures. Not positive thinking, not strategic planning, not emotional resilience—though these have their place—but faith rooted in heavenly realities.
When pressure comes (and it will), faith doesn't just help you endure—it positions you to triumph.

The Ultimate Pressure: The Mammon Test

While life presents numerous pressure points, Jesus identified the ultimate test in Matthew 6:24:

"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon."

Mammon isn't just money—it's a spiritual force that seeks to become your master through financial pressure.

For kingdom leaders, mammon's pressure manifests in sophisticated ways:

The Compromise Temptation

When that lucrative contract requires you to bend ethical standards, mammon whispers, "Everyone does it. You need the revenue."

The Security Obsession
When investment opportunities promise financial independence, mammon suggests, "God helps those who help themselves. Secure your future."

The Status Symbol
When lifestyle inflation matches income growth, mammon argues, "You've earned this. You deserve to enjoy success."

The Control Illusion
When wealth accumulates, mammon convinces, "Your financial acumen created this. You're in control of your destiny."

The Hebrew word for "fail" in Proverbs 24:10 (raphah) means to faint, weaken, or withdraw from pressure. When mammon applies pressure, leaders with insufficient HQ begin to:

Faint in their commitment to kingdom principles
Weaken in their resolve to put God first
Withdraw from the narrow path of integrity

Recognizing the Symptoms: When HQ Is Low

How do you know if you're operating with insufficient heavenly intelligence? Consider these diagnostic questions:

Decision-Making Patterns:

Do financial considerations override biblical principles in your choices?
Are you more concerned with quarterly profits than eternal impact?
Do you find yourself rationalizing decisions you wouldn't have made five years ago?

Stress Responses:

Does financial uncertainty create anxiety that prayer can't seem to touch?
Are you losing sleep over money matters while trusting God with your words?
Do market fluctuations affect your peace more than God's promises affect your confidence?

Relationship Dynamics:

Has wealth creation become more important than relationship preservation?
Are you more generous with business partners than with kingdom causes?
Do financial discussions with family create tension that spiritual discussions don't resolve?

Building HQ: The Strength Enhancement Protocol

Unlike IQ, which is largely fixed, HQ can be developed and strengthened through intentional spiritual disciplines:

1. Scriptural Saturation
Immerse yourself in God's economic principles. Study how biblical leaders handled wealth, pressure, and kingdom responsibilities.

2. Prayer-Driven Decision Making
Before every significant financial decision, seek heaven's perspective through extended prayer and fasting.

3. Accountability Structures
Surround yourself with other high-HQ leaders who will speak truth when mammon's pressure intensifies.

4. Generosity as Spiritual Warfare
Give generously as an act of warfare against mammon's influence in your life.

5. Eternal Perspective Maintenance
Regularly remind yourself that earthly wealth is a tool for kingdom advancement, not an end in itself.

The Practical Exercise: Your Mammon Pressure Test

Take this assessment to gauge whether you're operating in sufficient HQ or beginning to faint under mammon's pressure:

Part 1: Quick Diagnostic (Rate 1-5, where 1 = Never, 5 = Always)

Financial Decision Framework:

I pray before making significant financial decisions ___
I consider kingdom impact before personal benefit ___
I can walk away from profitable opportunities that compromise my values ___

10. I view wealth as a stewardship responsibility, not personal achievement ___

Relational Impact:

12. I'm known for generosity rather than financial acumen ___
13. People seek my advice on spiritual matters as much as financial ones ___
14. My leadership decisions prioritize people over profits ___
15. I model contentment regardless of my financial status ___

A potential client offers a contract worth 40% of your annual revenue, but requires you to misrepresent certain facts to regulatory authorities. Your response:

Scenario 2: The Investment Opportunity

C) Decline and seek kingdom-aligned investment opportunities

Scenario 3: The Lifestyle Decision

Your income has increased significantly, and you're considering upgrading your lifestyle (home, car, private school). Your decision process:

A) Upgrade immediately—you've earned it
B) Upgrade gradually to avoid appearing ostentatious
C) Maintain current lifestyle and increase kingdom giving
D) Upgrade only after extensive prayer and counsel

• Boundaries – Do I consistently make space for my own needs, or do I feel guilty saying no?

Relationship between the Poor in Spirit and HQ

In the past, I have often struggled with the term, "the poor in spirit."

At its core, being "poor in spirit" refers not to material poverty but to a spiritual attitude or disposition. It describes those who recognize their complete spiritual dependence on God rather than relying on their own spiritual resources or achievements.

Here are the key interpretations:

Spiritual humility - acknowledging one's spiritual neediness and emptiness before God
Recognition of complete dependence on God's grace rather than one's own merit
Freedom from spiritual pride or self-sufficiency in one's relationship with God
A willingness to empty oneself to be filled with God's presence

Poor in Spirit is the foundation to HQ

Bulgarian Border Ministry

Our teams serving Muslim communities near the Turkish border in Bulgaria report increasing community involvement:

"The Turkish-speaking Bulgarian community, two hours east of us, they are taking care of their communities more and more. They are handing out food boxes; helping needy people, serving the community; more people are coming to the church and faith."

Sudanese Refugees in Egypt

Perhaps most remarkable is the multiplication effect happening among Sudanese refugee communities in Egypt:

"We can see that giving is a church function that has started to take place in more of the groups among Sudanese refugees (Body of Christ and the VCJF) than before, them as communities trying to help people around them with their means. Although small on the surface, it has a huge impact in the families around them and we can see that those having an impact in their communities are the streams multiplying the most."

The Ripple Effect

The impact extends beyond the immediate Christian community. Our field leader in Egypt notes:

"It is quite remarkable when we see Muslims trying to imitate Jesus followers by receiving people into their homes to live with them. It didn't happen before, but when they saw Christians do this, they felt compelled to follow."

Beyond "Doubting Thomas": Challenging Religious Bias Through Historical Context

The label "Doubting Thomas" has become so ubiquitous in both religious and secular contexts that it's easy to forget we're talking about an actual historical figure—a complex human being whose life and ministry extended far beyond a single moment of skepticism. This common characterization represents a perfect example of religious bias, where a single incident overshadows a lifetime of faithful service and remarkable achievements.

The story that gave rise to the "Doubting Thomas" epithet appears in John 20:24-29. When other disciples told Thomas they had seen the risen Jesus, he famously declared he wouldn't believe unless he could see and touch Jesus's wounds himself. A week later, Jesus appeared and invited Thomas to do just that, leading to Thomas's profound declaration of faith: "My Lord and my God!"

The Problem with this Characterization

This single incident has led to Thomas being permanently branded as "the doubter," creating a lasting bias that fails to acknowledge several important points:

Thomas's doubt was no different from the other disciples' initial skepticism when they first heard of the resurrection from Mary Magdalene.

His response actually led to one of the strongest declarations of Christ's divinity in the Gospels.

This sterotypical characterization completely ignores Thomas's subsequent life and ministry.

Can you relate?

Thomas's True Legacy

Contrary to popular belief, historical records and traditional accounts paint a very different picture of Thomas after Pentecost. Far from being perpetually doubting, Thomas became one of the most courageous and far-reaching apostles:

The Indian Mission

Thomas is credited with bringing Christianity to India, demonstrating remarkable faith and courage by traveling farther than most other apostles. According to tradition, he established seven churches in Kerala and converted many people, including members of the royal family.

Fearless Ministry

Traditional accounts describe Thomas's bold proclamation of the gospel in Parthia, Persia, and India, often in the face of hostile authorities and challenging circumstances. This hardly matches the image of a perpetually doubting individual.

Martyrdom for His Faith

According to widely accepted tradition, Thomas was martyred near Chennai, India, killed by a spear while praying. His willingness to die for his faith represents the ultimate testament to his absolute conviction—a far cry from the uncertain figure often portrayed in popular culture.

Challenging Our Biases

The case of "Doubting Thomas" teaches us important lessons about religious bias:

We often reduce complex historical figures to their most memorable moments, losing the richness of their full story.
Religious traditions can perpetuate biases through oversimplified narratives passed down through generations.
These biases can prevent us from learning valuable lessons from these figures' complete lives and ministries.

Learning from Thomas's Complete Story

Thomas's journey from skepticism to unwavering faith offers a more nuanced and valuable lesson than the simple cautionary tale about doubt that's often presented. His story teaches us that:

Honest questioning can lead to deeper faith
A moment of doubt doesn't define a lifetime of service
Faith tested can become faith strengthened

Conclusion

The persistent characterization of Thomas as "doubting" represents a form of religious bias that we must challenge. His life story demonstrates that a moment of skepticism can be the foundation for profound faith and extraordinary service.

Rather than remembering Thomas for a single moment of doubt, we should celebrate him as "Believing Thomas," "Courageous Thomas," or "Missionary Thomas"—the apostle whose initial questions led to an unshakeable faith that carried the gospel to the ends of the known world.

And the work of righteousness shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Whenever you say no to one thing, you are automatically saying yes to something else.

So if we ever want to "take our own temperature," to gain perspective on "where we are" in our soul, all we have to do is ask people around us, "Are you sensing peace and quietness by being around me?"

AMA Principle: Reliability is about consistently meeting commitments and following through on promises.

Biblical Perspective: In the Bible, reliability is closely tied to faithfulness. Proverbs 25:13 says, "Like the coolness of snow at harvest time is a trustworthy messenger to the one who sends him; he refreshes the spirit of his master."

Example: Moses exemplifies reliability in his leadership of the Israelites. Despite challenges, he consistently communicated God's messages and led the people according to divine guidance.

A Divine Appointment in Indonesia

From Generosity to Divine Generosity

For over two decades, I have dedicated my life to the call of righteous leadership. Through A Ray of Light Ministries, which owns RighteousLeadership.com, and our Righteous Leadership Podcast, we've been spreading the message of integrity centered leadership, guided by divine wisdom. However, it wasn't until a providential meeting halfway across the globe that I discovered a profound connection between righteous leadership and divine generosity.

At an International Mission conference hosted by Operational Mobilization (OM) in Indonesia, I had the privilege of meeting Mary Pudaite, the Global Generosity Strategist for SIL International. This encounter, seemingly by chance, was nothing short of divine orchestration. As a board member of OM USA, I've been involved in numerous conferences, but this one would prove transformative in ways I couldn't have imagined.

Prior to meeting Mary, I was already familiar with the concept of generous giving. As a facilitator for Generous Giving's "Journey of Generosity" (aka JOG), I had embraced their vision: "To see the generosity of God displayed through the generosity of God's people." This noble vision had triggered my search for a deeper understanding of generosity.

Within the first five minutes of meeting Mary, I realized she was the answer to my deep search. It was truly a Mary moment, where (as we met for the very first time) my spirit leaped. I immediately realized that Mary wasn't talking about a Journey of Generosity (JOG); but "The Journey and Joy of Generosity (JJOG)." This may seem subtle, but it's significantly different. As illustrated in the image below, Mary was unveiling a dimension of generosity that only flows from a place of God's joy and generosity (Hebrews 12:2).

The Revelation of Divine Generosity

It wasn't until several months after my trip to Indonesia that the Lord revealed to me the purpose of this divine appointment with Mary. The Lord said, "I did not just connect two people, but I connected two visions (The Journey and Joy of Generosity and Righteous Leadership).

Two are better than one! [Ecclesiastes 4:9]

The Profound Connection

As I reflected on this revelation, several key insights emerged about the connection between divine generosity and righteous leadership:

Joy-Driven Service: A righteous leader, inspired by divine generosity, serves from a place of joy, not obligation. This joy-filled service reflects the heart of God and His delight in giving.
Abundance from Unity with God: Righteous leadership involves aligning with God's generous nature, tapping into an inexhaustible source of abundance to bless others.
Stewardship of Divine Joy: Leaders recognize that their ability to give and lead generously stems from their connection to God's joy, transforming their leadership approach.
Holistic Generosity: Divine generosity in leadership extends beyond material giving to include time, wisdom, and emotional support, mirroring God's all-encompassing generosity.
Cultivating a Joy-Filled Generous Culture: By embodying divine generosity, a righteous leader fosters an environment where joy and generosity become contagious, inspiring others to live similarly.

From Theory to Practice: The Journey of Joy and Generosity

The partnership with Mary, born from that fateful meeting in Indonesia, soon bore fruit. Mary invited me to co-facilitated "The Journey of Joy and Generosity" with pastors and leaders of SIL in South Sudan. This experience brought the theoretical connection between divine generosity and righteous leadership into vivid, practical reality.

Witnessing the transformation in these leaders as they grasped the power of joy-filled, divinely inspired generosity in their leadership roles was nothing short of inspiring. The harvest, as we say, was truly plentiful.

Looking Ahead: Expanding the Vision

A Lesson in Divine Guidance

This journey has taught me a powerful lesson: if God has to send you all the way across the globe to partner you with the right person so that you will fulfill the call of God on your life, He will. Why? Because the earth is the Lord's (Psalm 24:1).

My meeting with Mary wasn't just a coincidence; it was a divine appointment that has enriched my understanding of righteous leadership and expanded the impact of A Ray of Light Ministries in ways I could never have anticipated.

The connection between divine generosity and righteous leadership is not just a theoretical concept—it's a transformative approach to leadership that has the power to change lives, communities, and even nations. It goes beyond mere human generosity to tap into the joy and abundance of God's own generous nature.

As we continue to explore and teach this connection, we invite leaders worldwide to embrace the principles of divine generosity in their leadership journey. Remember, true righteous leadership is not just about making the right decisions or being generous out of duty (which is a Martha spirit); but true righteous leadership is about joyfully and generously pouring into others from sitting at the feet of Jesus and overflowing with the unity of God's generous heart.

So let us lead with open hands, open hearts, and joy-filled spirits, reflecting the divine generosity that has been so graciously extended to us all. In doing so, we not only become more effective leaders but also closer reflections of the Divine Leader we serve.

The Journey of Joy and Generosity

Our journey is just beginning. Before the end of 2024, Mary and I are set to co-facilitate another session with a similar group in Nairobi, Kenya. We have recently received an invitation from the OM ship Leader to advocate the message of the Kingdom to leaders in on board the Logos Hope in Port of Spain, Trinidad. There is no greater message of the Kingdom of God than divine generosity (John 3:16). In January 2025, we are headed to the Philippines to share the message of The Journey of Joy and generosity with over 500 pastors.

This expansion of our mission fills me with hope and excitement for the future of righteous leadership worldwide, now infused with the "jet fuel" of divine generosity.

Through Faith & Patience: A Lesson in God's Timing

As I recently celebrated my 60th birthday, I found myself reflecting on a lifetime of faith and the unexpected lessons that continue to shape my spiritual journey. While I've long considered myself a man of faith, walking by belief and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7), recent events have shown me that I still have much to learn about patience and trusting in God's perfect timing.

The Birthday Surprise

In the week leading up to my 60th birthday, I was consumed with preparations for what I believed would be a small, intimate gathering of friends at my home. Little did I know that my loving wife was secretly orchestrating a surprise celebration in my honor. In my laser-focused state, I inadvertently made her task far more challenging than it needed to be.

The Danger of Misplaced Focus

This experience taught me a valuable lesson about the potential pitfalls of intense focus, even when our intentions are good. In my eagerness to create a memorable birthday experience, I nearly missed out on the beautiful surprise my wife had planned. This realization led me to contemplate the delicate balance between faith, works, and patience in our spiritual lives.

Faith, Works, and Patience

We're often reminded that "faith without works is dead" (James 2:26), but my recent experience has led me to a profound conclusion: the essential "work" that accompanies faith is patience. As we strive to live out our faith, we must remember that God's timing rarely aligns with our own plans and expectations.

The EGO Problem: Edging God Out

In retrospect, I recognize that my intense focus on birthday preparations was, in a sense, an attempt to control the situation. This desire for control, however well-intentioned, can sometimes lead us to "edge God out" – or EGO, as I've come to think of it. When we become so fixated on our own plans and timelines, we risk missing the beautiful ways God is working behind the scenes.

Embracing Faith and Patience

As I reflect on the many watershed moments in my life, I realize that they often flourished not just because of faith, but also through patience. It's in those moments of waiting, trusting, and allowing God's plan to unfold that we truly experience the fullness of His promises.

A Birthday Lesson

In the end, the surprise birthday celebration was amazing, made all the more special by my wife's love and dedication. Yet, I almost missed out on this blessing due to my narrow focus. This experience serves as a powerful reminder to cultivate patience alongside our faith, allowing room for God's surprises and perfect timing in our lives.

Moving Forward

As I step into this new decade of life, I carry with me a renewed appreciation for the interplay of faith and patience. I encourage you, dear reader, to examine your own life and consider: Are there areas where your focus, however well-intentioned, might be edging God out? How might embracing patience alongside your faith open doors to unexpected blessings?

Let us strive to be like those mentioned in Hebrews 6:12, who "through faith and patience inherit what has been promised." For it is in this beautiful combination of trusting God and patiently awaiting His timing that we truly experience the fullness of His love and provision in our lives.

On September 1, 2024, I turned 60, and it's as though I entered into a period of stillness.

In that period of stillness, the Lord opened my eyes to the concept of health.

For years I have read verses in the Bible pertaining to health, and I immediately associated these verses with one's mental or physical health. Verses such as:

Twenty one days later (09/21/2024) I have come to realize that my association was not incorrect, but incomplete.

So, as I wrap up this very short blog, I pray that you will continue to prosper, and be in health:
