At its core, being "poor in spirit" refers not to material poverty but to a spiritual attitude or disposition. It describes those who recognize their complete spiritual dependence on God rather than relying on their own spiritual resources or achievements.

- Spiritual humility - acknowledging one's spiritual neediness and emptiness before God
- Recognition of complete dependence on God's grace rather than one's own merit
- Freedom from spiritual pride or self-sufficiency in one's relationship with God
- A willingness to empty oneself to be filled with God's presence
